If you want to find employment as an automotive engineer, you need to understand that there are three main specialty areas that people specialize in. There are manufacturing engineers, which are responsible for developing everything that falls within the process of production, such as the parts and assembly of everything. Then there are development engineers who have to coordinate the total design and set all of the various specifications for each part. And lastly, there are the product engineers who have the job of designing and testing transmissions, engines and many other kinds of components in order to make sure that safety standards and guidelines are met.

While those may be the three different specialties found within this career, there are really only two paths to take in order to find you in any one of those careers. There is mechanical engineering and automotive engineering. Here we will discuss the details for becoming an automotive engineer, even though the basic requirements for both paths are very similar. Of course, some important differences need to be adhered to in order to land the employment you have always wanted.

The best move to make is to begin your training while still in high school, if you are still enrolled. Taking classes such as chemistry, mathematics, and physics is a great head start to being able to pick and choose out of the various careers out there. You might also want to focus on computer science classes as well as information technology classes as these will come in handy when you finally start working with the computer assisted design and modeling. Any additional class that you can pick up that will put you one step closer to your goal is a class that you want to pay attention in.

Once you are ready for college, make sure that you are selecting a school that is just right for the type of career that you are trying to prepare for. You will want to earn at least a Bachelor's of Science in automotive engineering studies and technology. The course work that you will be subjected to will get you prepared for the real world of work that an engineer will have to handle. Such work will include following safety measures, emissions control, and testing certain parts. Applied testing and design will also be emphasized and you will have courses in laboratory methods and various engineering principles. By taking all of the right courses and paying attention, you will be ready for your career and already have some real world skills and experience under your belt.

For these careers, you will have to be certified as an automotive engineer. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers offer the exams for the certification. However, the help from these organizations does not stop there. You will be given career support and you have the chance to continue your education online. There are even some supplementary certifications classes that can help you keep up with all of the latest developments in the field since things such as electric and hybrid cars are changing the ways everything is done in terms of design.

These additional classes are not required, but it is a way to make sure that you are making yourself the better choice for gaining employment. You might also consider going back to school to earn your Master's degree if you have not yet done that. Just because you found the perfect employment, it does not mean that you should not do your best to stay ahead of the pack and make sure that you are up to date on all of the latest and greatest things that are coming out in your line of work.

You may find that you will have to pick up some additional classes just to make sure that you are meeting the acceptance standards for admission into the graduate school. Even though it sounds like a lot of work, if you want the best employment situation and paycheck possible, you have to put in the time and effort. Get started now and before you know it you will be finished with your schooling and working in the careers that you have always dreamed of working in.
