North Carolina- based Petty Enterprises cut at least three dozen employees Monday as the team continues to search for a merger or help that would keep the famed organization afloat in 2009.

This round of layoffs makes the total now almost 70 employees at the company. Petty released 30 employees the day after the season finale, on November 18.

Petty lacks full sponsorship for its cars next season, largely because the economic crisis has made sponsorship difficult to secure. Petty is currently in talks to merge with Gillett-Everham Motorsports, whom is looking for a partner to expand to a four-car operation.

Petty Enterprises is a NASCAR racing team based in Randleman, North Carolina. The team is owned by Richard Petty, his son Kyle Petty, and Boston Ventures.
