Half of America’s 50 states will each lose 3,000 jobs or more if Detroit’s automakers are allowed to fail, according to a confidential report by Ford Motor that has been obtained by the Detroit Free Press.

Nationwide, Ford employs more than 245,000 workers in its offices, factories, and 3,900 auto dealerships. The automaker also indirectly employees an unspecified number of workers through 7,300 auto parts suppliers.

While nearly 20% of those Ford-related jobs are located in Michigan, other states also stand to lose thousands of jobs as well.

The average job loss per state — just taking into account a Ford collapse — is 5,900.

Similar information about General Motors and Chrysler could not be obtained. But five other states stand to lose more than 10,000 jobs a piece if just Ford fails. These include Texas, with 18,000 Ford-related workers; California, with 17,800; Ohio, with 16,000; Florida, with 12,000; and Illinois, with 10,000.
