In July, Volkswagen Group of America announced that they will be bringing a new assembly plant to Chattanooga, Tennessee. The new plant is expected to be a one billion dollar investment in the economy and bring approximately 2,000 new jobs to the area.
The 1,350 acre site is located in Enterprise South Industrial Park, and the project is scheduled to get underway in the beginning of 2011.
According to the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, the automotive industry accounted for 32.8% of its manufacturing jobs in 2007, and according to the US Department of Labor it was ranked fourth in a list of manufacturing jobs by state in 2006. It employed 54,000 people and 5.1% of auto jobs across the country.
Currently, auto jobs make up one-third of Tennessee’s manufacturing jobs.
