As part of the Core Materials Engineering Group at FCA, the Wrought Bar and Forge Metallurgist for Heat Treatment will act as the highest level of expertise for heat treatment processes within the organization. They are responsible for making informed decisions concerning heat treatment, carburizing, nitriding, induction heating and other thermal processes in regards to bar and forged product physical properties. The Heat Treatment Engineer will have access to the heat treatment lab for steel characterization, problem solving tools, and development of novel heat treatment processes. They assist production facilities and suppliers in troubleshooting of heat treatment processes and give final approval for the installation of new processes. He/she will develop and maintain specifications related to heat treatment processes and work with powertrain, transmission and engine groups to provide comprehensive root cause and laboratory testing in support of failure analysis or new product development.
The wrought bar and forge metallic group is a core technology group and maintains expertise through industry consortia activity, self-directed projects, university research, and supply-base interaction. Through these sources, the group monitors and develops emerging technologies for use in FCA. The group also provides structured training internally for engineering, design, quality and purchasing departments.
Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET accredited program
Eight years of materials engineering and heat treatment experience
Strong leadership and project management skills
Well-developed oral and written communication skills
Master’s degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science from an ABET accredited program
Five years of experience in automotive component design
Familiarity with automotive axle, transmission and engine materials and related thermal mechanical processing
Familiarity with metallurgical and material failure analysis
