This automotive engineering degree programs give students exposure to varied fields of engineering like mechanical engineering. Automotive engineering in college give practical training by creating real and practical projects for local companies through which students can learn the specifics involved and learn the direct application of the theories learned.
Colleges can get students work as an intern under any company that gives them the right kind of exposure. This internship program also gives the student the advantage of being a part of the organization. The student should have a strong understanding of calculus, advanced math, statistics, physics, chemistry, and geometry. All of this subject knowledge is important for an engineer. They may specialize in any of these fields: manual transmission and transaxle principles, engine electrical systems, circuits and electronics, engine principles, motor sport technology, power train systems, automotive design and manufacturing, steering and suspension, basic fuel and emission control systems, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
An automotive engineer may get an opportunity to work as an auto mechanic, machinist, product designer, or educator. An auto mechanic will work on the construction of cars and analyze the various automotive problems that may arise. A machinist is often working on the blueprints of the cars or vehicles developed by engineers to see if the designs could be developed further. Product designers are involved in the manufacturing and development of vehicles or cars.
Automotive engineers must have a bachelor's degree from an automotive engineering college which can provide the students with the education necessary to understand the intricacies involved in the business. Such programs should focus on the exterior and interior design of cars or vehicles and the computer aided drafting and design applications. Simulations are generally taught during the training.
Safety engineering involves the assessment of crash scenarios and determines the quality of the designs. Emissions researchers are involved in testing fuel emissions. Other positions are also available in the field of automotive engineering which are just as research intensive.
The need for new cars or vehicles in the industry creates a demand for such skilled engineers. The average salary of engineers is in the range of $45,000 to $60,000. This increases with the proficiency acquired with course of time, to $70,000 and above.
