Automotive Mechanic is a technician who repairs the bodies of automobiles and the technical systems running it. Found at vehicle repair shops and dealerships, approximately 15 per cent of them are self-employed. An Auto Mechanic's position is of a highly specialized and detail oriented nature. Usually educational training as a mechanic is required to acquire the required skills. Vocational programs in automotive technology or automotive service is an appropriate training for a mechanic's position. These programs are generally offered through high schools or through associate's degree program. Most mechanics are required to have ASE (automotive service excellence) certification, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This program provides certification in a specialized area which could be anything from engine repair, brakes repair, suspension and steering, electrical systems or heating and cooling. A passing score and two years of experience are required to obtain the certificate. An experience as a trainee or a technician's assistant helps in boosting the qualifications.

According to the statistics, an Auto Mechanic earns an average of $17 per hour while the highest can be more than $28 per hour. Annual package is around $34,000 or more. Mechanics with vocational school degree, ASE certification including specialized experience and training usually tend to earn higher salaries.

The job an Automotive Mechanic involves inspecting, servicing, repairing and providing maintenance on automobiles. The job work can range from simple to complex. The mechanic must have an understanding of the components and mechanisms of different types of automobiles. The mechanic has to be aware of the latest computerized technology and must be able to work with computerized equipments.
